Sample Conference Schedule

The following general schedule is provided to give those interested an idea of the conference content.  All items are subject to change.  Currently, the conference includes 5 nights in Jerusalem, 4 nights in Bethlehem, and 3 nights in Tiberias (Galilee)

Saturday, November 5: DEPART FROM U.S.
Participants will travel from their respective airports on overnight flights to arrive in Tel Aviv (TLV) on Sunday, November 6.

Sunday, November 6: ARRIVAL & QUARANTINE AT HOTEL Jerusalem
Participants arrive at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv (TLV); shuttles transport participants to the Golden Walls Hotel in Jerusalem for settling in. Participants must quarantine and will receive all meals in the hotel until receiving their negative test results.

Monday, November 7: QUARANTINE, FREE TIME, FIRST GATHERING AS A GROUP Jerusalem
Upon receiving negative COVID test results, there will be free time for strolling around Old Jerusalem and rest. Our program begins with dinner.

Tuesday, November 8: OUR FEET ARE STANDING WITHIN YOUR GATES! Jerusalem
Walking tour of the old city. Sites will include the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and a portion of the Via Dolorosa. We will worship and meet with leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), our partners in the region. The afternoon will include presentations back at the hotel.

Wednesday, November 9: SACRED SPACES, HOLY PLACES, AND A SHARED HISTORY Jerusalem
An early morning option is to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher as it is opened before daybreak and to stroll through Jerusalem before merchants have opened their shops. Then we’ll visit the Temple Mount/Haram Al-Sharif, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Mount of Olives. In the afternoon we’ll visit YAD Vashem, The World Holocaust Memorial. We’ll meet with representatives of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities that share this holy city.

Thursday, November 10: A ROAD TRIP AND TASTING TOUR Jerusalem
Today we’ll hit the road to hear from additional speakers and see some of the sites in the regions surrounding Jerusalem. We’ll visit Rawabi, the first modern planned Palestinian city, and take a tour of some local businesses to learn about their industry.

Friday, November 11: FROM JERUSALEM TO BETHLEHEM Bethlehem
We’ll leave Jerusalem for Bethlehem and begin with a guided tour of some of the distinct neighborhoods in and around Jerusalem. We’ll stop for lunch at St. Andrew’s Church and then enjoy a tour of sampling at Cremsian Monastery and Winery in Beit Jala. We’ll check in to the Manger Square Hotel in Bethlehem and have some free for explore Bethlehem and shop at a nearby co-op.

Saturday, November 12: O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM… Bethlehem
Today begins with experiential learning opportunities. Participants will get to choose from options including olive wood carving and sanding at the Giacaman Family Workshop, wool felting with L’Arche Community, a visit to the Mosaic Center, and a cooking class at Aida Refugee Camp. The afternoon will include presentations followed by a visit Shepherds Field and a dinner celebration with music and folk dancing in Beit Sahour.

Sunday, November 13: WORSHIP AND THE LIVES OF NEIGHBORS Bethlehem
We’ll have free time around Bethlehem and worship at Christmas Lutheran Church, the congregation in Bethlehem is affiliated with our partner denomination the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). We’ll visit the Tent of Nations for lunch and learn about this Palestinian farm. We’ll also visit the nearby Israeli Settlement of Efrat to meet with city leaders.

Monday, November 14: ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL AND POLITICAL REALITIES Bethlehem
Speakers today will help us understand the economic, environmental, and political realities of those who live in the region. In the morning we’ll hear from the Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem (ARIJ) and then visit Dar-Al-Kalima University for a tour, lunch, and meeting with students and leaders. In the afternoon we’ll visit the nearby city of Hebron with its Israeli settlement in the heart of the city. We’ll see the Ibrahimi Mosque and the old town market. Be prepared to buy street food, spices, and handicrafts from the local merchants. We may also stop at the Hebron Glass Blowing Factory.

Tuesday, November 15: FROM BETHLEHEM TO GALILEE Tiberias
We depart Bethlehem with stops at Jacob’s Well and Sebastia, the biblical Samaria. We’ll attend a theatre performance in Jenin and visit the Church at Burqin on our way to Tiberias. We’ll arrive to the Ron Beach Hotel in time for dinner.

Wednesday, November 16: EXPLORING THE LAND OF JESUS’ MINISTRY Tiberias
In the morning we’ll visit the Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, and the Church of St. Peter’s Primacy. We’ll enjoy a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee and have lunch at the Ein Gev Kibbutz. After lunch, we’ll visit Caesarea Philippi and Banias National Park where we’ll renew our baptismal covenant in the waters at the foot of Mt. Hermon.

Thursday, November 17: PUTTING THE PIECES OF THE MOSAIC TOGETHER Tiberias
We’ll visit the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth on our way to tour Sindyanna of Galilee, a Palestinian and Israeli co-op that sells handmade products. We’ll also have a guided tour of little-known sites and spend time hearing from those who are working creatively for peace and justice in the Galilee region.

Friday, November 18: GALILEE TO TEL AVIV
In the morning we will pack and depart Tiberias. We’ll stop in Ibillin to have our commissioning service at the Church of the Beatitudes and to hopefully hear from Father Elias Chacour. We’ll visit the Mar Elias Educational Institute and learn about its efforts to foster peace and justice through education. On our way to Tel Aviv, we’ll stop in Caesarea, Haifa, and Jaffa before our evening flight departures. Those who are extending their stays can be dropped off in Jaffa or taken back to Jerusalem.

Saturday, November 19: HOME AGAIN, BUT CHANGED
